BIZEN WARE

Bizen ware is a type of unglazed pottery made in Okayama, Japan. It is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and it’s tradition has been passed down for more than 800 years. Bizen clays are dug up from underneath rice fields and occasionally blended with locally sourced mountain clays, for a rougher texture. Despite the absence of glaze, they have a wide range of patterns that are created from manipulating the flames and the way ashes layer over them. They’re fired for about a week until the temperature inside the kiln reaches 1200℃, which makes them sturdy and impermeable. All the pots are sanded with extra care after firing.
